Metformin is mainly use to treat type 2 diabetes to controlling high blood sugar helps to prevent another disease like kidney damage, blindness, nerve problem ,sexual function and loss of limbs.
Decrease glucose absorption form GI tract.

What is Metformin ?

Metformin is the drug use to treatment of type 2 Diabetes or Non insulin dependent diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is that condition in body can not process the insulin hormone
Insulin is mainly responsible for metabolize the blood sugar .due to insufficient of insulin
Blood sugar level increased.

Type 1 diabetes is occours due to sometime our immune system is more active they can’t identify or mistakenly attack to beta cells present in the ilets of langharance of the pancreas. Metformin taking is prolong theraphy
For immediate release tablets
Initially take 500 mg /12 hours or 850 mg /day
Regularly take dose 1500-2550 mg dose divided per 8-12 hour .
Dose is not exceded 2550 mg per day.

For extend release tablets
Glucophage XR :500 mg once/day in night.
Fortamet :500-1000 mg once /day.
Glumetza:1000 mg once/day

Metformin and phenformin is comes under Biguanides classification of diabetic.

Abdominal pain
Anorexia
Nausea
Metallic taste
Mild diarrhea
Tiredness
Vitamin B12 deficiency due to absoption interfear of metformin.
Lactic acidosis occour with metformin .it is occour in rare case.

Phenformin and metformin were comes in the 1950s
Due to high risk of lactic acidosis phenformin was withdrawn form the market of many countries and banned in India since 2003.

Metformin preparation by the glyciphage and glycomet and its plasma half life is (t1/2 )1.5 to 3 hour .

Daily dose of metformin 500 mg -2500 mg maximum dose is 2-3 hour,

Action of metformin

It is not directly affect the insulin release it suppress hepatic gluconeogenesis and glucose out put form liver.
Increase isuline mediated glucose disposal in muscle and fat. They don’t translocation of GLUT4(major glucose transporter in skeletal muscle.
 Metformin prevent intestinal absorption of glouse and other hexose,amino acids and vitamin B12.

Metformin promote peripheral glucose utilization by stimulating anaerobic glycolysis.
it is not stable in the pure form ,it is only stable in salt form.

Metformin extend release tablets are more price as compare to normal tablets
For example if normal tablet price starts form 7 rupees then extend relese tablets price around 16 rupees.
Normally metformin 500 mg price start form 4 to 10 rupees . 1000 mg metformin starts form 18 to 46 rupees .
